Turkey is a bridge between Europe and Asia. Juxtaposed between East and West, Turkey is a mixture of the many cultures that surround it. It is here the great religions of Islam and Christianity met in battle. This clash of cultures has shaped the Turkey we see to this day.
Alexander the Great conquered Anatolia in 334 BC. The Emperor Constantine made Byzantium and Constantinople the new capital of the Roman Empire in 330 AD. It was here that Constantine's support of the Christian faith helped establish and spread Christianity throughout the world.
In 1071 the Seljuk Turks defeated the Byzantine Army and Turks began to migrate into Anatolia. In 1453 Sultan Mehmet II conquerored Constantinople. This began the influence of Islam and the beginning of the Ottoman Empire. The Empire reached it's apex under Sulieman the Magnificent in the 16th century.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk established the Republic of Turkey as a secular democracy in 1923.
