Split lies on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia and is one of the oldest cities of ancient Illyricum, a Roman Provence. The city's position on the Adriatic Sea made it an important maritime hub. Over the centuries many wars have been fought to posses it. Seeing this beautiful city it is easy to understand why.
The Roman Emperor Diocletian built his Palace here in the 4th century. The site was later abandoned and the Palace remained empty for centuries. When the ancient capital of Salona was sacked in the 7th century, Romans fleeing the conflict settled into the fortified remains of the Palace. Today the Palace remains the very heart of the city and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
We visited Split on the "Grand Princess" as part of a Princess Cruise of the Mediterranean. Departing Venice we visited cities on the Adriatic, the Greek Isles and Southern Italy, the last stop was Civitavecchia. The Dalmatian coastline viewed from the deck of the ship was incredible.
